NUDE OF THE WEEK: La Grand Odalisque by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, 1814
Welcome to my first Nude of the Week! It was pretty difficult to choose which glorious nude would feature in this introductory post. However, I eventually chose this stunning piece by French neoclassicist Ingres, which has always been one of my favourite reclining nudes for the almost golden tone of the woman’s skin and the ornate, eastern inspired surroundings. I was recently lucky enough to visit the print rooms at Tate Britain to look at some original Pre-Raphaelite sketches; various Ingres pieces were mentioned in the talk to demonstrate certain techniques and poses that inspired the Brotherhood. So essentially, this painting has been fresh on my mind!
